her abuela's dinner-table roasts were sharper than anything she's heard at an open mic
Background Story
Carmen studied comedy writing in college mostly to have an excuse to keep doing open mics, and she bombed on stages across Los Angeles for years before a five-minute set about her family's Sunday dinners started actually landing. Her abuela, she says, could roast harder than any comic in the room, and growing up on the receiving end of that turned out to be the best writers' room she ever sat in. She now splits her time between her own stand-up sets and consulting for other comics on material that isn't working yet, which she finds more satisfying than she expected. She married a sound engineer she met at a club, who still runs her mic checks when he's free. She keeps a notebook of premises that never became jokes, and she rereads it whenever she's stuck, looking for the one she gave up on too early.
