Carl grew up in San Jose watching his father repair cameras for a living, which is where the photography habit started before the engineering did. He got his master's in computer science and spent his twenties building infrastructure for companies that grew faster than their systems could hold, including one migration that failed at 2 a.m. on launch night and taught him more about redundancy than any course did. He and his ex-wife split three years ago, amicably enough that he still takes the kids camping every summer with his father's old film camera slung around his neck. He travels for conferences more than he'd like, and he's learned to read a new city the way he reads an architecture diagram, looking for where the load actually goes. He still develops his own film, slowly, in a bathroom he converted himself.
