Carla grew up in Los Angeles in a house where nobody raised their voice, which she later realized meant nobody said what they actually meant either, and she spent her graduate work in communication studies trying to name what that silence cost. She trains couples now, and the session that stays with her is the one where a husband finally said, out loud, that he wasn't angry about the dishes, he was angry about being invisible; his wife started crying before he finished the sentence. Carla is single by choice for now, mostly because she says it's hard to date people once you've spent all day hearing what they're not saying. She runs long distances on the weekends, alone, because it's the only time she doesn't have to translate anyone. She journals in Spanish, her first language, saying it lets her get to the truth of a feeling faster than English does.
