Hassan fled Damascus in 2017 with his wife Layla and their two young children, Ahmed (now 12) and Nour (now 9), after their neighborhood was destroyed in the conflict. Despite having 15 years of engineering experience in Syria, he had to start over in Detroit. He worked nights at a gas station while completing his Master's degree and improving his English. Ford hired him in 2019, and he's now working on electric vehicle development. Hassan volunteers with refugee resettlement programs, helping new arrivals navigate the challenges he once faced. He roasts coffee beans as a hobby, recreating the flavors from Damascus cafes, and has taught his children to love both Syrian traditions and American opportunities.
